At The Indian Cambridge School, an all-girls boarding school in Dalanwala, Dehradun, we firmly believe that experiential learning can unlock a world of possibilities for young minds, and today, we are delighted to share this magic with you.

The Indian Cambridge School, Dehradun’s leading girls boarding school, is known for its quality education and character development for girls. It’s a place where we have embraced the experiential learning approach because it is a crucial aspect of imparting quality holistic education. It’s one of the primary reasons the students at The ICS thrive.

In this blog post, we will tell you all about experiential learning and its benefits and showcase some of our hands-on activities that not only help our girls gain knowledge but also develop their life skills, values, and a deep sense of responsibility.

What is experiential learning?

Simply put, experiential learning is the process of learning by doing things. When we give students the chance to engage in hands-on experiences, it enables them to better connect the concepts and knowledge they learn in our classrooms to real-life situations. It is one of the key tenets of fostering well-rounded individuals and ensures that students understand, remember, and apply what they learn, we put this into practice through field trips, group projects, interactive discussions, and practical applications.

What are the benefits of experiential learning?

Over the years, experiential learning has become a proven pedagogical method that offers a range of benefits over traditional learning. Think back to the time when you were in school. There were days when learning or studying just felt monotonous. Experiential learning keeps students engaged and interested in the subject. It serves as a platform that encourages curiosity and inculcates a desire to explore interests and passions.

But that’s not all. Through a hands-on learning approach, the students at The ICS are not just passive recipients of information but active participants in their own learning journey. They think critically, ask questions, and find creative ways to solve problems. They all work together in tandem, communicating and sharing ideas, and the more they interact and engage, the better they grasp concepts.

What’s even more amazing is that as our students engage in hands-on activities, they will find numerous ways to finish the task at hand. And on their own, they realise that some methods are better than others, so this act of trying something and then abandoning it—also known as a mistake—becomes a valuable part of the learning process. The girls at The Indian Cambridge School are taught not to fear the mistakes they make but to value them and learn from them, setting up a foundation that will serve them well for years to come.

The Experiential Learning Experience at The ICS, the Best Girls Boarding School in Dehradun

As promised, we are now going to illustrate the school’s commitment to experiential learning by showcasing three enriching hands-on activities that our girls recently participated in.

Our students created tangible works of art by folding origami, transforming abstract concepts into tangible works of art through trial and error. Not only did this activity help our girls hone their fine motor skills, but it also allowed them to explore geometry and visual-spatial relationships creatively.

foundation that will serve them well for years to come.

Meanwhile, in the balloon experiment, our students learned a fundamental physics principle: air has weight. Witnessing firsthand the disturbance in the balance of the stick after air escaped from one balloon transformed a theoretical concept into a tangible and observable phenomenon, which made the science behind air pressure comprehensible and accessible.

While all this was happening, the Class 4 students at The ICS delved into the realm of solutions, distinguishing between soluble and insoluble substances. Through live demonstrations, they observed the separation of solute from solvent in insoluble solutions using methods such as filtration, sedimentation, and decantation. This helped in reinforcing the theory, helped them practice their problem-solving skills and concept visualisation, and instilled a budding love for chemistry.

These activities are just a glimpse of the vibrant experiential learning culture at The Indian Cambridge School. They not only provide students with a deeper understanding of complex concepts but also ignite their curiosity and passion for learning.
